About
Matilda Stokes
Musician and Computer Scientist based in Bristol and London
I compose and produce electronic music and I build experimental instruments that blur software and hardware. My work explores the intersection of sustainable material practice, tactile interaction, and experimental sound design.
Background
I undertook a BA in Music at the University of Bristol, focusing on electronic music composition and performance. After working in the music industry, I pivoted to an MSc in Computer Science, also at Bristol, where I specialized in human-computer interaction and embedded systems.
My interdisciplinary approach combines hands-on experience in ceramics, electronic music production, and software development. I'm particularly passionate about creating instruments that prioritize sustainability and tactile engagement over conventional plastic-based hardware.
Practice & Approach
I'm drawn to granular synthesis and microsound—techniques that fragment and reconstitute audio at the grain level to create experimental textures. This approach mirrors my interest in material recyclability: taking existing elements and transforming them into something entirely new.
In my instrument building, I work primarily with earthenware clay, copper, and embedded electronics. I hand-build ceramic forms using slab construction and sculptural techniques, integrating capacitive touch sensors directly into the clay surfaces. This creates interfaces that are both functional and expressive, encouraging more deliberate, exploratory interaction than flat, generic synthesizer panels.
